CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS

MALAY THEATRE COURSE

Picture
MALAY THEATRE COURSE
by Anwar Hadi Ramli

For participants aged 17-30 years old
16 Sessions
$10 per person / session
Maximum of 20 participants per session
Location: 42 Waterloo Street / Goodman Arts Centre

REGISTRATION OPENS ON THE 1st OF JANUARY 2026

The Malay language is the National Language of Singapore. As Malay theatre is not widely offered as a CCA or a curriculum in Singapore’s institutions, it is increasingly harder to have trained Malay theatre performers participating and producing Malay theatre. This programme aims to plug the gap in Malay Theatre education and train individuals to be performance ready whenever a Malay Theatre production is staged.

All classes will be conducted at convenient locations along Singapore's arts education and performance belt.

THIS COURSE IS SUITABLE FOR:
Individuals who are interested in Malay Theatre.
Students who do not have access to Malay Theatre training in their own institutions.
Students who do not have the opportunity to attend an arts school.

Students who wish to gain knowledge on Malay Theatre and impart the knowledge gained to like-minded peers in their own tertiary institutions.
VIEW COURSE SCHEDULE HERE: https://drive.google.com/file/d/128eHZketRwf8KUyrykAwRfd6UNFBdi3p/view?usp=share_link

Participants can choose to attend any session of their choice. It is however recommended to attend all sessions as the topics are designed to be progressive and co-related.

Participants who complete 12 sessions will be presented with:
  • A certificate
  • A testimonial and recommendation letter
  • Opportunities and recommendations to participate in Wayang Lakon SG and affiliate theatre productions.

TESTIMONIALS FROM FORMER STUDENTS

AL-MATIN YATIM

Anwar Hadi Ramli, my mentor-instructor at Temasek Polytechnic's Malay Drama Club from 2007-2010, made every training session incredibly engaging and rich.

He fostered a safe space for us to express and explore, transcending a typical student-teacher dynamic.

Even after 15 years as a professional, many of his profound teachings continue to guide my practice.

AMIRAH YAHYA

In my three years in Republic Polytechnic’s Pentas Karyawan, I served as an ex-co member and was under the guidance of Anwar.

He brought tremendous energy and insight to every class and rehearsal. He demonstrated not only a profound understanding of Malay theatre and performance techniques but also the ability to inspire students to express themselves confidently and authentically.

One of the things Anwar does best is dedicating to nurturing talents and encouraging creativity, whether guiding us through script development, directing stage productions or giving personal feedback,

He always took the time to ensure every student felt valued and challenged to reach their best potential.

I am deeply grateful to have had Anwar as a mentor and teacher during such formative years.

HISYAM SALIMNOR

I was a member of Pentas Karyawan from 2017-2021
and held the role of Head of Logistics and Finance during my second year.

Learning and working with Anwar is never a waste because he will teach everything about the stage and Malay theatre.

I'm proud and happy to have him as my teacher/trainer and also a friend in this performing arts industry

RARAH HAERMIE

Training sessions with Anwar during my three years in RP were always so enjoyable. He consistently ensured that each session was different and meaningful. At the end of every training, there was always something for us to reflect on and work towards. He is highly observant and take notes of each member’s strengths and weaknesses, assigning us roles that best suit our abilities.

The trainings were filled with lifelong lessons and practical skills that we could apply in our daily lives—such as public speaking, presenting in front of a crowd, and maintaining physical fitness to look confident on stage.

As the Head of Welfare for Pentas Karyawan from 2018 to 2019, Anwar also made sure that my role remained relevant and that my ideas were always acknowledged. He provided thoughtful input and encouraged me to express my creativity, making sure every member felt valued and appreciated in PK

SHARIFAH ALIYAH

Under the tutelage of Anwar Hadi Ramli, i have gained a unique perspective towards theatre as a whole. His lessons are filled with actions which accompanies varied intentions of how a theatre student should voice and move, one would never do any act without a purpose.

His theatre class is exceptionally well-structured, providing a balanced blend of theory, technique, and creative exploration.

Each session builds thoughtfully on the last, allowing students to develop their performance skills progressively while fostering collaboration, confidence, and critical thinking.

The inclusion of warm-ups, theatre games, character development, and reflective discussions demonstrates careful planning and a deep understanding of the performing arts.

DILAISYA

Anwar is such a fun and engaging teacher! His classes are always full of energy, creativity, and laughter.

He is experienced and knowledgeable, and it really shows when he guides his students during trainings.

I’ve learnt so much from his classes. Not just body movement, miming, and how to be comfortable in the space, but also technical acting skills that have sharpened my performance.

He includes games like improvisation that keep every session exciting and interactive. I’m encouraged to play, explore, and express myself freely, which sparks my creativity and builds my confidence.

Although the training can be tiring,  it’s absolutely worth it because it’s so fun and fulfilling. Is basically like hanging out with friends, playing games and learn new things with them HAHA.

I truly encourage anyone who’s passionate about drama, looking to pick up new skills, or just want to work out in a fun way, to join his classes.

Wont regret muahahah. I’ve gained so much and enjoyed every moment! Will definitely attend his classes again!
